The Deutschland-Ticket – Cheap Travel Throughout Germany
The Deutschland-Ticket gives you unlimited travel across Germany for just €63 a month. With this monthly travel pass, you can travel on all regional and local trains, buses, trams and underground trains. Why is this offer available? How does it work? Where is it valid? Deutschland-Ticket at a glance

A Deutschland-Ticket for students
In Germany, students can purchase a discounted Deutschland-Semesterticket. This D-Ticket is valid for one semester.

FAQ – Deutschland-Ticket
The price of the D-Ticket increases periodically. Since January 1, 2026, it has cost €63 per month; in 2025, the price was €58.
Please note that a Deutschlandticket is always valid for one calendar month (January, February, etc.). For example if you buy a ticket on the 15th of a month, it will be valid until the end of that same month. Unlike other types of monthly passes, it will not be valid until the 15th of the following month.
You always have to pay the same amount regardless of when you buy the ticket. For example, someone who buys the ticket on the 1st of the month pays €63 – the same as someone who buys it on the 15th, even though they have fewer days to use it.
Attention: The Deutschlandticket is only available as a subscription. If you do not cancel your subscription by the 10th of a month, it will automatically renewed for the following month. Payment is automatically debited from your bank account at the beginning of each month.
Please note!
- The Deutschland-Ticket is personal – only you can use it.
- Children under the age of 6 travel free and do not need their own ticket.
- Bicycles and dogs are not included.
If you want to take a bicycle, you’ll need to buy an additional Fahrradtageskarte (bicycle day ticket). Bicycles must be placed in the spaces reserved by the regional railway companies.
The Deutschland-Ticket can be used on regional trains and buses (SPNV) and on local public transport (ÖPNV) throughout Germany.
This means that a ticket bought in Freiburg can also be used on the Berlin Underground, on ferries in Hamburg, or on regional train in Munich.
The Deutschland-Ticket is valid only in second class.
Important!
The €63 monthly ticket is not valid on long-distance trains such as the ICE (Intercity Express), IC (Intercity), or EC (EuroCity) trains.
If you use the Deutschland-Ticket for a long journey — for example, from Frankfurt am Main to Dresden — be prepared for several changes and a longer travel time.
The Deutschland-Ticket can be purchased on the Deutsche Bahn website, via the DB Navigator app, or from regional and local transport providers.
You can, of course, also purchase a D-Ticket in a DB Travel Centre at the station.
You can cancel your Deutschland-Ticket by the 10th of the previous month at the latest. After this date, the subscription will be automatically renewed.
For example, if you do not want to renew your Deutschland-Ticket for December, you must cancel it before November 10.
If you buy the ticket after the 10th of the month, the contract is automatically extended for the following month (since the cancellation period has already expired). You will therefore be charged for two calendar months, even if you only need the ticket for one.
If you bought your ticket from Deutsche Bahn, the easiest way to cancel is via the Aboportal (subscription portal) or this online form.
Please note:
You must indicate the subscription number and not the order number. Otherwise, Deutsche Bahn will not consider your cancellation request.
No, the Deutschland-Ticket is not valid for a cross-border journeys.
However, there are a few exceptions for stations close to the border.
For instance, you can use the D-Ticket to travel from Lauterbourg and Wissembourg in France to Germany and back.
It can also be used to travel to Salzburg and Kufstein in Austria, and Schaffhausen in Switzerland.
In summer 2022, Germany introduced a low-cost rail pass known as the €9 Ticket. The aim was to help people cope with rising fuel, energy, and food prices. The initiative lasted three months — from June 1 to August 31, 2022.
During that time, 52 million tickets were sold, and one in five buyers had never used public transport before.
The program benefited both the public and the climate, leading to discussions about a permanent nationwide ticket.
After months of negotiations, the federal government, the federal states, and transport companies agreed to create the Deutschland-Ticket, which came into effect on May 1, 2023.
